Guide to Soap Nuts Laundry Soap

Soap nuts, also known as soapberries, are the dried fruits of the Sapindus tree (Reetha), which is native to India, Nepal, and other parts of Southeast Asia. Soapnuts contain saponin, a natural surfactant that is released when it is soaked in water. Soap nuts have been traditionally used to clean clothes and even in Ayurvedic shampoos. Saponin creates a soapy solution that cleans clothes effectively without the need for harsh chemicals. It's used as an organic natural laundry detergent because it's good for you, your family, your pets, and the environment.

How To Use Soap Nuts?

Step 1:
The Soap nuts soap bag includes a small cotton pouch. Insert 4-6 soapnut shells into the small pouch.
Step 2:
Place the laundry in the washing machine and toss in the small pouch.
Step 3:
Let the pouch sit inside for all the cycles.
Step 4:
Take the clothes out. Allow the pouch to dry in the laundry room until it is ready to be used again.
Step 5:
Throw out the used soapnut shells after 3-4 washes or if they turn grey and mushy. Replace them with a new batch.
Step 6:
The shells that are discarded can be used to make plant compost.

Usage and Safety Tips

  • Avoid touching your eyes after handling soap nuts, as the saponin can be irritating. Wash your hands after use.
  • Regularly rinse and dry the cloth bag completely between uses to prevent mold or mildew buildup.
  • Do not overload the washing machine, as soap nuts need space and water movement to work effectively.
  • Keep soap nuts out of reach of pets and children to avoid accidental ingestion.
  • Store unused soap nuts in a cool, dry place to maintain their effectiveness.
  • Soap nuts naturally soften fabrics, so you may not need to add a separate fabric softener. Soapnuts in our store are lavender-scented.
  • As mentioned already soap nuts can be reused for 3-4 loads of laundry or until they turn soft, gray, and no longer feel soapy.
  • Use warm or hot water to effectively release the saponin from the soap nuts. If using cold water, pre-soak the soap nuts in hot water for a few minutes before adding them to the wash.
